Color and Design
Color Confidence by Jinny Beyer
, 40 minutes long. This popular video guides you through a diverse variety of color selection examples. Jinny's approach is to select, shade and combine colors to add interest, depth, and dimensionality to your work. She works with a device that she made called The Portable Palette, which is commercially available.
Design into Stitch, 90 minutes long, but in two parts so that you can watch a 45 min. long segment for a meeting. This is a video by the unique and well known needle artist Jan Beaney. Learn how to analyze a scene and sketch it simply. Try painting your fabric in simple shapes to give a background for your stitches. You can add appliqué pieces or use machine embroidery if appropriate. This is an inspirational video that shows you how to guide yourself through a design process so you will end up with successful projects. A how-to on design, not on stitching. Caution - Jan Beaney is an avant garde needle artist and traditional needle artists may not appreciate her style or work. For those with a desire to learn all aspects of needle design, it does get you thinking.

Twisted Cord Embellishment
, 58 minutes long. This is wonderful demonstration tape about twisted cord by Marcia Brown of the Binding Stitch. Easy to follow instructions will have you on your way to creating all types of wonderful twisted cords. Many people know how to make one and two thread twisted cords, but Marcia shows the technique to making three, four, and five thread twisted cord. Once you see the approach, you’ll want to try this yourself. But perhaps the best part of the whole tape is the last 10 to 15 minutes where Marcia shows you how to sew the cording onto your piece, be it pillow or ornament or whatever, how to hide the stitching and join the end pieces of the cording together so it is invisible - and it is not that hard, you just need to know the technique. An excellent video tape for a chapter meeting program, but have members bring some threads, like pearl cotton, to try making their own cording after they see this tape.
Exquisite Tassels, 50 minutes long (for demonstration of one color and two color tassels.) Again Marcia Brown does a fantastic job of showing you the tricks behind making lovely tassels. This tape can be divided into three parts, the first two parts cover one and two color tassels and is about 50 minutes long. The last part uses a unique monkey knot on the top of the tassel (this lasts another 20-30 minutes), and is for the more adventurous learner. Marcia shows the tricks and techniques behind making lovely tassels - bring a comb with you! She includes instruction on adding beads and buttonhole stitches around the top of the tassel.
Ornament Finishing 58 minutes long. This is wonderful demonstration tape about ornament finishing by Marcia Brown of the Binding Stitch. This is short enough to show at a chapter meeting and practice on your own ornament, and you’ll have many friends willing to help.

Shady Threads, 45 slides, updated 2004, script included, a study on the effect of shading in needlepoint, how shading enhances a needlepoint piece and how to achieve those effects. Each one of us has struggled, at one time or another, with deciding which thread or stitch to use in a needlework piece. When we look at the needlework pieces from seminar exhibits we are struck at how simple threads and fabrics are combined to create spectacular results. We are left to wonder what approach to take to achieve similar results. Shady Threads is a newly-updated slide program that introduces elementary design and color concepts using threads and stitches, combined with ideas and examples, to help you see the choices before you so that you too may enhance your needlework.
